The objective of this training unit is to give a brief review on the history of insulation.

Objective

The objective of this unit is to provide an introduction to insulation including the transfer of heat by conduction, convection and radiation, hot and cold thermal insulation, acoustic insulation, cryogenic insulation, personal protective insulation and terminology.

Introduction

From experience in a wide field of interest including chemical processing and oil and gas companies, a number of design considerations have emerged and implementation is considered best practice.

Previously it has been common to focus more on the type of coatings, insulation, and cladding materials and less on the installation and maintenance but both need to be considered of equal importance.
